Small by Design: Why the Right Team Was Our Most Important Investment
When Dr. Sperl and I opened Compass Orthodontics, we made a decision that didn’t show up on any balance sheet, but shaped everything that has happened since: we hired the right people before we were ready to.
Starting an orthodontic practice from the ground up comes with no shortage of costs — a custom-built office, new equipment, the hundred small expenses no one warns you about. The easy path is to hire lean, hire fast, and hire minimally until the numbers say otherwise. We chose differently. We waited for the right people, even when that meant carrying the cost of a fuller team sooner than a spreadsheet would recommend. It remains one of the best decisions we’ve made.
Why the Team Matters as Much as the Treatment Plan
Orthodontic care isn’t a single appointment — it’s a relationship that unfolds over months and years, dozens of visits, countless small moments that add up to a family’s entire experience of getting a healthy, confident smile. The treatment plan matters. So does who greets you at the door, who remembers your child gets nervous about the scanner, who explains a plan clearly enough that you actually feel informed rather than just agreeable.
That’s the part of orthodontics you can’t outsource to efficiency. It has to be hired for, deliberately.
Lauren, our Practice Manager, grew up in a small town, and she’s built that same instinct into how our office runs — even on our busiest days, patients are met by name, not by number. Her steadiness behind the scenes, from scheduling to insurance to the small logistics no one sees, is exactly what lets a boutique practice feel unhurried even when the calendar is full.
Makella, our Clinical Coordinator, brings a precision to every appointment that comes from genuinely loving the craft. She pursued her training deliberately, chose dental assisting because it fit her exactly right, and has spent every day since sharpening her skill. That pursuit of mastery is why patients leave appointments feeling confident not just in their progress, but in the hands guiding it.
Victoria, our Treatment Coordinator, brings more than two decades of orthodontic experience to every consultation — but what stands out most is how she uses it. That depth of experience isn’t about efficiency for its own sake; it’s in service of genuinely knowing the families she works with. Victoria has a gift for building real relationships with patients and parents alike, the kind where families feel like they’re talking to someone who cares about them as people first, not just a case to move forward.
A Different Kind of Practice, By Design
Orthodontics, like much of dentistry, is increasingly shaped by large dental service organizations (DSOs) — corporate models built for scale, standardization, and volume. There’s nothing wrong with efficiency. But scale and personalization tend to pull in opposite directions, and families can usually feel the difference.
Compass was built to be the alternative: a small, family-owned practice where the person who designed the building is the same person who might paint the artwork on your consult room wall, and where the team you meet at your first visit is the same team who will know your child’s name at your last. That kind of continuity isn’t accidental. It’s the direct result of choosing, from day one, to invest in people first.
What This Means for Your Family
When you sit down in one of our chairs, the experience you have — feeling heard, feeling cared for, feeling genuinely known — isn’t incidental to the practice. It is the practice. It’s the outcome of a decision we made before we ever opened our doors: that the right people, hired deliberately and invested in fully, would be worth whatever it cost to get right.
We’d love for your family to experience that difference for yourselves. Schedule a consultation or stop by and meet the team. We’d love to show you what a small, intentional practice feels like.
